It was the first successfully produced true porcelain In Europe and dominated the style of European porcelain manufactured until approximately 1756, after which the leadership ultimately passed to French. The secret of true porcelain, similar to that produced in China, was discovered about 1707 by Johann Friedrich Bottger, an alchemist, and Ehrefried Walter von Tschirnhaus, a physicist, whose research into porcelain had earlier produced a stoneware that is the hardest known substance. The rarity and expense of Meissen porcelain meant that originally it could be bought only by the upper classes; this gradually changed over the 19th century. When a wealthy class emerged in the United States in the nineteenth century, such families as the Vanderbilts. Many of these collections then found their way into the world's great museums, including the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Featuring one of the largest collections in America.
