An interesting small cup and saucer made by Augarten in the early 20th century. I mainly bought it because of the mark on the saucer which I knew existed but never saw in person but the cup itself is also in a style I have not seen by them. More of an original Royal Vienna or Alt Wien style. The cup is hand painted with a superb scene to the front including four ladies one of which is holding a sword. The rest of the cup has a turquoise ground color with a nice maroon band with a white design in it, a black band to either side of that, gold trim on the inside and to the edge of that. A raised gold dot trim around the scene, a gilded handle and a gold band to the top inside of the cup. The saucer has the same ground color and trim design. It's an unusual set but really quite nice. The cup is 1.875 inches tall and 1.875 inches in diameter. The saucer is 0.625 inches tall and 4.25 inches in diameter.

The set is in great condition with an area of the top black band on the cup near the handle having flaked off and filled in to hide it which could be done better. The cup is marked underneath with the blue shield with the crown on top as well as the word Wien underneath and the saucer has the shield mark with Augarten under that. Not a mark one sees often at all.

The cup has a cut across the mark denoting it being a second choice piece. An interesting cup & saucer for sure!
