Antique Rosenthal Dresden Hand Painted Portrait Cup & Saucer Phoenix Bird Handle
Antique Rosenthal Dresden Hand Painted Konigin Luise & Countess Zofia Potocka Portrait Cup & Saucer Phoenix Bird Handle. The original firm was founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria. Since 2009, Rosenthal has been owned by the Italian company Sambonet Paderno Industrie (Arcturus Group). The cup: 6.7 cm diameter/ 6.8 cm high (without handle). The saucer: 12.2 cm diameter. Minor gilt wear on the nob of the phoenix handle. A tiny dent and a pinpoint dot on the top rim of the cup. The base of the cup is uneven, making the portrait side of the cup 3mm higher than the handle side. Please remember that these are all handcrafted, so they are not perfectly made in scale. The hand painted portraits are beautifully detailed and gold-framed, surrounded by gold beaded and raised flowers. Strands of raised gilding and raised gold flowers scattered on the beautiful cyan ground of the cup and the saucer.
The cup features a graceful design with Phoenix style handle, the rim and the handle are richly gilded. The couple's happy, though short-lived, marriage produced nine children, including the future monarchs Frederick William IV of Prussia and Wilhelm I, German Emperor.
Zofia Potocka nee Clavone was a Greek slave courtesan and a Russian agent, later a Polish noblewoman. She was famous in contemporary Europe for her beauty and adventurous life. Compatriots of her time wrote: She was beautiful as a dream, a child of southern countries. All those who have seen her admire her beauty, igniting a fire in the hearts of men and envy in the eyes of women.
