This rare and decorative porcelain tea cup and saucer was produced by Wedgwood in England during the early 19th century, circa 1815. The cup features a large hand painted Pied Wagtail, to the back of the cup flanking the handle are two sets of three hand painted features. The saucer features a Sedge bird protecting its nest eggs, surrounding it are nine hand painted feathers. Both pieces were painted by the Wedgwood painter Aaron Steele (b 1765 d 1849). The pattern number is 723 and the pattern was known as Steels bird pattern gold edge.

Each piece in the service featured a separate hand painted bird. This makes the PERFECT gift for a bird lover or bird spotter, it is an ornithological delight from the 1815 period.

The base of the cup features the red WEDGWOOD mark and hand painted script reading Pied Wagtail. The saucer features the red WEDGWOOD mark and hand painted script reading Sedge Bird. Sedge Bird being a Sedge Warbler. This is a sought after pattern by a talented Wedgwood artist, pieces in this service rarely come to market.
